The Fall Pollinator Garden

Fall clean-up in a perennial native flower garden is minimal—clear any weeds & save the seeds! There will be a new wave of activity in the pollinator garden this fall & winter. Here you can see the garden is filled with late blooms & flower seeds, most of which we leave for the flock of wildlife that feeds here during the cold months. This area feeds wildlife throughout the year and creates nesting grounds for pollinators & beneficial insects to overwinter in. A lot of the “fall clean-up” is saved for springtime & even then it is very minimal! The native flower habitat we began to install in 2019 is a self-sustaining habitat. We mainly clear away weeds & tree debris that falls there.

Take a peek at our fall garden in 2022 in this video here. You’ll see lots of late-blooming flowers as well as TONS of flower seed heads. The stems, seed heads, leaves & all will stay in the garden. Everything will eventually break down and add nutrients to the soil which then will feed the following year’s habitat.
