Get to know some unique herbs: Cutting Celery & Lovage

Cutting Celery and Lovage might be some of the most underutilized herbs we’ve come across during our farming career. Last year, we planted more Lovage and also wrote a blog post about this delicious herb. Plants get rather large in the home garden and need about 2’ of space. Loving Lovage is easy because it’s a hardy perennial that has a beautiful blend of celery and parsley flavors. We’ve really enjoyed using it raw, cooked and dried. Recently, we bottled up a new Savory Herb Blend of Lovage, Marjoram, Rosemary, Sage and Dill. This blend really brings a pot of soup to life!

Cutting Celery, also known as Leaf Celery, is an herb we are excited to grow again in 2023. In our experience, it’s easier to grow than stalk celery, continues giving all season long and doesn’t attract as many pests. Stalk celery is harvested as a whole plant whereas Cutting Celery is harvested as individual stalks. We started Cutting Celery seeds last week; this herb is grown for it’s leaves and not its stalks, although they can impart wonderful celery flavor but are usually too fibrous to consume. Throw them in a stock pot and use them to infuse great flavor in cooked dishes. It’s important to note that this herb is mostly used for cooking or drying and not eaten raw.

Omaha area customers can sign up for our weekly produce emails on the home page of our website! Both of these herbs will be available this year. If you’re not in the Omaha area, you can grab a bottle of our Savory Blend and look for other herb blends in the near future that feature these flavorful herbs.
